Sure there are some things you an try but nothing you HAVE to do. You were pretty much stuck to those build orders once you learned them if you wanted to actually have a shot at winning. The first game had pre-set build orders that you had to use to be effective in your race. The maps are smaller and you field less units so the "epic" feel of the first game is gone.

You can use rez to get power nods but those don't really classify as a building. There is only one building and you upgrade that to get units. There is no turtling in this game unless your trying to lose. The game play of dawn of war 2 is far from traditional, its really more intense from the start. They also encourage very different play styles as mentioned earlier in my rant/review, Dow 1 is often much slower in game play mainly because you can secure and fortify your base and strategic points on the map with turrets whereas you have very little ability to do so in DoW 2, where you can deploy only a handful of turrets which have limited firing arcs and you are forced to rely on rapid repositioning and reinforcement of your forces if you want to survive.ĭoW 1: Mostly slower, more classic RTS in style and presentation, large replay value (for me at least) and many expansion packs (don't get Soulstorm, it's shit.)ĭoW 2: Faster and more fluid gameplay style than DoW 1, focuses heavily on unit positioning, a very nice campaign mode and you get to play as Nids, which is pretty nifty.ĭawn of war 2 in my opinion is a little bit better than dawn of war 1.

However I will admit that DoW 2's campaign was quite enjoyable and at no point did I feel like the computer was cheating nor did I ever really hit any roadblocks of frustration as I did with DoW 1 on occasion, especially in the Dark Crusade (fuck multi-team Imperial Guard) despite it being my favourite expansion.ĭoW 1's had far more replay value for me, the skirmishes are always fun for me, but the myriad expansion packs have also added to the game's longevity. Personally I've prefered DoW 1 over Dow 2, I abhor the fast paced frantic scurrying across the map between strategic points in DoW 2, I'm very much a turtler in my game tactics and prefer to strangle my enemy of resources and then finish them off with a 'spear thrust' attack rather than the constant offence and counter-offence of DoW 2 skirmishes.
